At an early stage of scatter of notch impact values over the length and cross section of electro-slag welded joints caused investigations to be carried out into those metallurgical reactions that ...take place between the slag and the molten metal and which could bring about a refining of the grain structure of the metal. In this direction metallographic investigations showed that titanium had such a refining effect. The author gives a report of research work carried out on test pieces made from construction steel grade St 37, to which a varying amounts of FeTi had been added during welding.
