A simple preparation technique of cave bear teeth for age determination by cementum increments

A simple preparation technique of fossil teeth for dental cementum analysis is introduced. Ground section of tooth roots are etched with 15-25% H3PO4 for 5-15 minutes and then stained with 0,5% ...solution of gentianae violet for a few seconds. As a result, the cementum increments become clearly visible at moderate magnification. The procedure is quick, cheap and easy to repeat if necessary. It was tested on cave bear teeth from Palaeolithic site Divje Babe in Slovenia. For the cave bear, this laboratory technique proved to be the most efficient one. It is worth trying on other animal dental remains, too.
