Oversowing white clover into hill pasture swards

The efects of white clover surface sowing was studied on hill pastures (750-840 m a.s.).The trials started in 1984, on pastures rotationally graized with heifers. Clover was oversowed at three ...different dates during grazing season (May, June, August). Next year the frequency of white clover appearance was estimated and scored on a 0-6 scale. The results shows, that oversowing had significant effect on white clover proportion in grazing sward. The best results were obtained with spring oversowing.In the second year after oversowing (1986) the yield, mineral content and nutritive value of pasture were estimated. It was concluded that with white clover oversowing (5 kg/ha),suitable fertilizer application and good utilized pasture (high stocking) can be substantially improved quality and quantity of herbage on hill pastures.
