  • Influence of modified Wurster draft tube on coating uniformity of pellets [Elektronski vir]

    Objective: The main objective of our study was to evaluate the influence of modified Wurster draft tube on the particle coating performance. Modification enabled the additional flow of air through ... the perforations in the draft tube inner wall.. Materials and methods: After coating the neutral pellets with polymeric solution comprising colouring agent, pellet batches were characterized for coating variation, yield and degree of agglomeration. The shapes of particle impact profiles inside the draft tube were evaluated by employing the piezoelectric probe. Results: The results clearly indicate the influence of the additional airflow through the draft tube perforations on the coating uniformity, expressed by relative standard deviation (RSD) value of the dye amount, dispersed in the coating layer of pellets. Lower RSD values were noticed in every experiment conducted in a conventional Wurster (CW) chamber equipped with a modified draft tube compared to the reference experiment where conventional draft tube was used; regardless of the air flow rate and the gap size. Swirling airflow inside the draft tube (SW) also contributed to much more uniform deposition of the coating material when compared to CW process. Additional improvement in coating uniformity was achieved when using modified draft tube at a 20 mm gap at all inlet airflow rates. In case of a 10 mm gap and 156 m3/h airflow rate, slightly higher RSD was achieved. The shapes of particle impact profiles inside the draft tube, obtained by the piezoelectric probe, indicate the difference in the particle flow distribution when using modified Wurster draft tube instead of conventional.
