  • Motives of parents from the Slovene region of Pomurje to sign up their children for sports activities [Elektronski vir]
Karnet, Karla ; Kajtna, Tanja, 1977-
Sport is becoming increasingly important, we dedicate more and more time and attention to sport, while it also serves us as a retreat from our everyday routine. Since children engage in their first ... physical and sports activities in their family, we decided to study in this diploma thesis the motives of parents from the Slovene region of Pomurje to sign up their children for sports activities. We were interested in determining whether differences existin the structure of parents' motives regarding their demographic background and the location of the child's school and whether the parents with children attending sports activities engage in sport more regularly as those whose children are not signed up for any sports activity. We were also interested in parentsć opinion on the range of sports activities in the Pomurje region, which types of sport they feel are missing and how much they are prepared to pay for their childćs sports activity per month. Taking into account the most common motives of parents and other answers, we will be able to offer children sports activities which will be of interest as well for themas for their parents. A survey was undertaken to gather information on 145 children who attended one of the six primary schools in the Pomurje region in school year 2009/10. The collected data were analysed with the use of the SPSS 17.0 software. Simple descriptive statistics parameters were calculated and a one-way variance analysis was carried out. A t-test was used for independent samples and a X2 test. The data were presented in tables, pie charts and histograms. The statistical significance was determined on the basis of a five percent risk. The results have shown that the most important motive why parents sign their children up for sports activities is "because sport helps children to develop their capabilities". The following motives were also common: "because I want my child to learn teamwork", "because in sport everybody must follow the same rules", and "because children enjoy exercising". To sum up, the study showed that the most common motives are those which help children to obey certain rules and learn teamwork, which is a good lesson to learn early in life, and, at the same time, parents are also aware of the most important aspect of sport, fun. It is vital that children have fun and are able to relax when they engage in sport since it will help them to spend their free time usefully in the future as well.
