The needs and trends of the modern car industry can be defined nowadays through shorter development stages, lower design and production costs and higher quality of the products. Therefore, in the ... past few years more and more large car manufacturers tend to turn to outside design companies and suppliers with tasks that cost too much or in-house engineering teams cannot handle. This has forced OEMs into different relationship with their suppliers. Modern OEMs have evolved from small enterprises, present only on the local market, into financially strong and globally present companies. At the present time, these companies can ensure the development and the production of parts, components and automotive systems in whole through their own project management and financing. To be able to accomplish the task as quickly as possible and at the highest quality level, they try to transfer certain part of the design work to their subcontracting suppliers. In that sense the new type of subcontractor has arisen - the so-called developing-supplier. Parts and components that are developed by such supplier have to comply with the demands of the OEM manufacturer. At the same time, the supplier can dictate the development of certain parts through its own know-how. This kind of cooperation is known as a partnership and demands a different approach to the design process in order for the latter to be successful. The development of the part or component is done on the basis of technical demands specified by the buyer and in tight cooperation of both the supplier and the buyer. The development procedure of the new part or component is interweaved with the permanent harmonization of demands between the buyer and supplier. This type of cooperation requires a unified development procedure. This development procedure must contain as a firm basis all elements and actions that are needed to ensure the high quality of the final product.
