The oceanologic properties of the seawater in the Gulf of Trieste before and during the "mare sporco" phenomenon (summer 1988)

The oceanologic variables were measured in the off-shore water of the Gulf of Trieste in 1988 (when an intense development of the "mare sporco" phenomenon occured) and were compared with the ...variables measured in the previous year (1987) with sparse mucilage in the sea. In the year 1988 the sea-water column of the Gulf was significantly poorer in phosphates, nitrates and phytoplankton cells. On the other hand, it was richer in ammonium, seston, bacterioplankton and non-pigmented flagellates. There was an increase statistically significant in temperature throughout the water column, but all other parameters were not significantly different. On the basis of the available data, the hypothesis that the "mare sporco" is in the case of the Gulf of Trieste the consequence of temporary pollution could not be proven.
