Bacteriological contamination of the eastern part of the Gulf of Trieste (North Adriatic) due to sewage discharge

The dispersion of faecal coliforms in the surface coastal waters of the eastern part of the Gulf of Trieste (North Adriatic) during the years 1980-84 was studied. The impact of the main outfalls of ...principal sewage nets in the region (towns Koper, Izola, Piran) on the sanitary quality could be detected approximately 400-800 m from these pollution sources. The influences of other small direct sewage discharges were limited. The relations between the distance of different pollution sources and the concentrations of faecal coliforms, are discussed.
