  • Sprechen über Emotionen : neurobiologisch und alltagssprachlich : das Beispiel Angst
    Henn-Memmesheimer, Beate
Emotions and the particular experience of emotional episodes have been the object of language-reflexive and neuroscientific studies. At present, neuroscientific research in particular is receiving ... on-going support and is reaching a broader interested public in more or less popularised versions. Furthermore, if we look at everyday and cultural-constitutive ways of speaking we find different vocabularies for emotions, sensations and sympathy at different times and among different social groups. The relationship between scientific and everyday descriptions will be demonstrated on the basis of the word field Angst, which has been thoroughly researched by linguists. The aim of this paper is to examine the biological vocabulary in its relevance for culturally defined contexts of perception and action. Does knowing "the biological basis" mean that one has a better understanding of culturally defined actions and situations? This has been claimed by many doctors, biologists, anthropologists, while philosophers especially call for aseparation on the principle of the two vocabularies. Descriptions of emotionality which have been developed in the natural sciences produce, from this perspective, explanations which are completely independent of the discourses which have evolved in everyday life worlds, along with their validity claims. It will be shown that linguistic semantics can provide relevant arguments in this debate.
