    The article addresses literature integration at the early stage of foreign language learning, in this case of German language learning. The expression "early foreign language learning" in this ... article refers to preschool childrenand children in a primary classroom; children with basic or not-yet-developed reading and writing skills. The article focuses on the expression "literature," on how this expression is understood in a narrow as well as a broader sense and its role in foreign language learning. In relation to "literature" the article presents areas of "childrenʼs literature" and "literacy socialisation". The article then presents an example of two successfully executed German classes in a group of first year pupils at a primary school in Ljubljana who take a German elective course one hour per week. The classes were based on a chosen didactic text - the Erwin Groscheʼs poem "Der Uhu Ulrich," and represent an example of successful early foreign language learning into which literature is integrated. The mentioned example presents the results of the classes and lists suggestions for improving this kind of language learning. In the conclusion the article argues why literature is crucial already at the early stage of foreign language learning and names advantages this kind of learning brings for further encounters with literature.
