  • Francoski gerundijski polstavek in njegove ustreznice v prevedeni slovenščini
    Mezeg, Adriana, 1981-
The paper focuses on a contrastive analysis of French sentence-initial gerundial (en participle) clauses and their counterparts in translated Slovene texts, taken from the French-Slovene parallel ... corpus FraSloK. The extracted Slovene translations were syntactically and semantically analysed in order to find translation strategies that would be useful in the professional as well as pedagogic context. In Slovene, the closest equivalent of the French gerundial clause is deležje, however our hypothesis about its seldom use in contemporary Slovene texts was confirmed. While in French these clauses appear in peripheral position, isolated from the subject of the main clause, in Slovene it seems more natural and coherent to express their contents with a finite verb form placed within a subordinate and less frequently a coordinate clause. The semantic relationship between a gerundial clause and the main clause, which is implicit in the source language and has to be inferred from the linguistic or extra-linguistic context, becomes transparent in translations. In relation to the source examples, more than 90% of Slovene translations from FraSloK are syntactically and semantically more explicit. At least two reasons underlie these findings: grammatical differences between the two languages and different stylistic preferences of the Slovene.
