English language and ideology in film : subversive use of language variety in Anglophone cinema = Angleški jezik in ideologija v filmu : prevratniška raba jezikovne raznolikosti v anglofonskem filmu : diplomsko delo

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the ways in which language variety in film dialogue can be used to subvert dominant discourses and ideologies. Through the tools of discourse analysis, six ...examples of Anglophone film dialogue are analysed and several other examples of dialogue from British and American cinema and television are provided to support the findings. The symbolic power of language and the representational character of filmic speech are exposed through analysis of patterns of dialect and register deployed to express the characters' social status, their gender, race, nationality and class. The varying prestige of language variants is identified, as is the power embedded in certain language registers. The analysis of the select films shows that films most often subvert the dominant ideology by displacing or hyperbolically re-articulating the language varieties associated with certain habitus, or social groups. Very often, this is done through humour, parodying or satirising the conventions of dominant modes of representation, or drawing attention to a perceived dissonance between a certain cultural mode and a specific language variant.
