Reading beyond the lines : a comparative stylistic analysis of good and bad poetry = Branje preko vrstic : kontrastivna stilistična analiza dobre in slabe poezije : diplomsko delo

The field of literary evaluation is one that has for a very long time avoided scientific methods, which prompted me to contribute towards developing an objective system capable of distinguishing ...between good and bad poetry based solely on stylistic markers. I decided to focus my study on horizontal and vertical coherence of foregrounding and to limit my analysis to the following poetic devices: rhymes, metre, enjambment, and syntactic parallelism. The aim of the stylistic analysis, which was performed on ten good and ten bad poems (half of each belonging to the Romantic era and the other half to the Victorian age), was to test the assumption that secondary deviations are more common in good poetry and that, in good poetry, foregrounding is more likely to be found on several linguistic levels (phonetic, syntactic, and semantic). The results confirmed the first hypothesis in the case of enjambment and rhymes, and rejected it in the case of metre. The analysis of the second hypothesis was further divided into phonetic, syntactic, and semantic level. On the phonetic level, the results for syntactic parallelism and enjambment refuted the second hypothesis, while the results of the syntactic and semantic analysis confirmed the hypothesis in the case of enjambment and rejected it in the case of rhymes and syntactic parallelism. Even though there are some similarities between different poetic devices, the results still indicate that generalisations are not possible and that, therefore, each poetic device should be studied separately in regard to its effect on the quality of a poem.
