  • Hugo von Hofmannsthal in njegova poezija : diplomska naloga
    Praprotnik, Miha, 1981-
In this thesis, we presented the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal; we learned about him as a writer who was publishing his works from his teenager years until his death. He was from an aristocratic family, ... highly educated, and a family man. He wrote in virtually all literary genres; he started with poetry and lyrical dramas, and later he also wrote prose, librettos, drama, comedy and criticism, and speeches. A common theme of his works was death, the world and I, human relations, especially the relations between lovers and frequently the theme of adultery and intrigue. At an early age he met and also joined the elite of the contemporary writers in Vienna - called Young Vienna. Through these relationships he met with the modern French symbolist poetry, which left a deep mark on his work. Taking into account the criteria of symbolist poetry, we presented him as a symbolist poet. We observed the correspondences, the music of the words. We found that there are frequent themes in his poetry, death, the world and I, a oneness - unity - all-oneness, transience, and timelessness. In the chapter - Letter, we analysed a fictitious letter from Lord Chandos and discussed the possible interpretations. We pointed out the paradox of how Chandos on one hand cannot talk and express himself, while on the other he does it masterfully. We stopped by his most famous work - Everyman; the drama, which is also widely known in our country. We took a step back in history to the beginnings of the spiritual dramas and the circumstances of the occurrence in the Everyman. We found that here is also present the topic of death, and that this is a play adapted by domestic and foreign authors as well. Hofmannsthal collaborated with Richard Strauss. Together they created six operas; we have verified and briefly presented them; we have found that some of them evoke the past of the Habsburgs, some spread by ancient motifs, while the Woman without a shadow is an original fairy tale.
