  • Translating dialects : African American vernacular English in the novel To kill a mockingbird [Elektronski vir] = Prevajanje narečij : črnska angleščina v romanu Ne ubijaj slavca/Če ubiješ oponašalca : diplomsko delo

The thesis presents an analysis of some possible translation strategies for translating dialects in literary works. It also examines the role of idiolect in characterisation, and its effects on the ... reader's perception of literary characters. In the thesis, a passage from two different Slovene translations of Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird is analysed with the help of Kitty M. van Leuven-Zwart's comparative and descriptive models. Two different translation strategies are identified and their effects compared. The analysis shows that in the case of dialect and idiolect, microstructural translation shifts related to register have a significant effect on characterisation. This indicates that an appropriate translation strategy is key in preserving storyline unity and consistent character portrayal.
