English proficiency and language perceptions in Slovenia across generations [Elektronski vir] = Znanje angleščine in odnos različnih generacij do angleščine v Sloveniji : magistrsko delo

This paper discusses the role of English in modern society. It explores English proficiency in Europe and in Slovenia, the fields and frequency of English use, an attitude towards English and the ...status of English. All of these questions are addressed by the use of available literature, and by research conducted in order to describe the situation in Slovenia. The research compares the differences between the younger and the older generation in their perception of English. The findings are the following: people of different generations assess their knowledge of English differently, with younger people being more self-confident; younger people use English more often than the older ones whereas the situations of use mostly coincide; younger people generally have better attitude towards English in comparison to the older ones; different generations have similar opinions about the status of English in the future, predicting that English will preserve its significance. In this research, age affects the results to some extent while education seems to contribute less to the variety of the results.
