A specific part of our lives, otherwise completely governed by measures and values, is globally not quite in unison. It is not some subjective idea as one would expect, rather the very objective ...system of measurement units: united all over the world in quantities, divided by measurement units. This thesis explores three different metric systems (the international SI system, the imperial and the US customary system), focusing on their base units and some other culture specific features pertaining to their usage. The practice of translating a selection of phrases with non-SI units into Slovenian is examined and elaborated upon. Finally, a research of perception of the non-SI units was conducted among a small sample of the Slovenian youth to illuminate their relationship to concepts that originate from foreign systems of measurement. Translation theory dictates the usage of the SI in scientific subfields, while for general and literary texts it is acceptable to adapt the original term into the metric system (SI) or even express measurement values in both systems. When translating set expressions, on the other hand, translators are at their own discretion when choosing the appropriate target language equivalent. Both culture and language specifics need to be considered when selecting the equivalent. Through research of a small sample we have concluded that archaic Slovenian unit terminology (which conceptually corresponds to the English units) is barely still recognized, unless coupled with its equivalents in English. In essence, many young Slovenians, who are fully metric, are better at connecting imperial and US customary units through concepts of quantity in English than knowing their actual Slovenian equivalents.
