  • Vpliv rock poezije na sodobno ameriško pesniško tradicijo = The influence of rock poetry on the contemporary American poetic tradition : doktorska disertacija
    Martić, Igor
This PhD thesis deals with the poets of rock; singers and musicians who have transcended the medium of popular culture and have tapped into the rich poetic tradition of the United States of America ... to such extent that their artistic output has started to be seen as one of the most interesting expressions of poetry of the second half of the twentieth century. Because of its strong impact on the development of American poetry, and its merits in helping to bring poetry back to the public spotlight (mostly because of such poets-musicians like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed), it is necessary to define it as a legitimate poetic movement, worthy of academic interest and inquiry. This thesis aims to present the artistic value of rock poetry and to prove my hypothesis about its powerful influence on the development of the American poetic tradition, and on the generations that have grown up listening to the lyrics of rock poets. In it I have examined the links between the selected rock poets and their forbears, especially American (among others, Whitman, Ginsberg, Kerouac), in order to define and synthetically present this poetic movement. I believe that the results of my research will help uncover the mechanisms through which poetry remains necessary and relevant for the society. This is one of the key aspects of my research; if we understand how poetry adapts to the times and the world around it, it will be easier to evaluate the innovations that each new generation of poets brings. In order to prove the literary worth of rock poetry, and to classify it within the American poetic tradition, I have chosen to examine the work of its three major representatives: Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed. The historical-theoretical part presents their respective biographies, careers, personal philosophy and mythology, while the empirical part is comprised of the analysis of their lyrics from a cultural and an aesthetic perspective. In the thesis, several hypotheses have been tested in order to confirm the basic idea of rock poetry being an important poetic movement. The first hypothesis examines the status of rock poetry as a legitimate heir to the tradition of American poetry of the first half of the 20th century. The second deals with the relationship between ethnic literature V and folk poetry and the work of rock poets. The third hypothesis is built on the first two, and states that the verses of rock poets are tightly associated with the experience of contemporary America. The fourth hypothesis I have tested is that rock poets have, through their lyrics, already left an undeniable trace on the generations that have grown up with their work, and that they have subsequently brought poetry back to the people and the public spotlight, and have, by doing that, helped it evolve to the stage at which we find it now. I believe that the combination of these hypotheses proves my initial and foremost hypothesis of rock poetry being of exceptional importance for both American and world literature.
