The transhumanist dilemma in Deus Ex: Human Revolution [Elektronski vir] = Soočenje s transhumanistično dilemo v video igri Deus Ex: Human Revolution : magistrsko deloHacin, JanThis thesis examines implicit and explicit connections between transhumanist ideas and video games based on a critical analysis of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It first outlines the main points of the ... modern debate between transhumanists and bioconservatives, then moves on to describe the role that transhumanism has played in some of the arts. We can observe the fact that video games implicitly promote a transhumanist outlook due to their mechanical nature, even though there are examples of games that explicitly engage with the many issues of technological development. We also learn that video games require different academic approaches due to their inherent diversity in style and purpose. The analysis of Deus Ex: Human Revolution reveals it to be a video game that maintains a critical perspective towards transhumanism, even though its mechanical nature implicitly promotes ideas of techno-progressivism. Through the act of immersing the player into its virtual environment and motivating them to reflect on socially relevant issues, Human Revolution can, like many other futuristic role-playing video games with a high level of player agency, influence the player's later decisions in life and motivate them to develop an actively transformative outlook on their real-life society.Type of material - master's thesis ; adult, seriousPublication and manufacture - Ljubljana : [J.
