  • Action and suspense : adaptation of crime fiction for the radio [Elektronski vir] = Napetost in akcija : priredba kriminalk za radio : magistrsko delo
    Mulec, Rok
My paper explores the adaptation of crime and mystery fiction to radio drama. While adaptation to film has been explored rather well, adaptation of any fiction for radio seems to lack any theoretical ... work on the mechanics of this process. My paper discusses three factors linked to radio adaptation: abridgment, dramatic dialogue and narrator. It is necessary for a novel or a short story to be abridged in order for the adaptation to fit into a temporal frame reserved for the play. Dramatic dialogue has an immersive effect on the audience; it gives characters voices and brings the play closer to reality. Last but not least, the narrator's role is to guide the audience through the play, supplying information which is not dramatized. The theoretical part begins with an introduction to the ingredients of radio drama (words, sound, music and silence). Further on, the theoretical part explores the theory of abridgment, dramatic dialogue and narrator, and looks for context in radio mystery. Secondly, the practical part contains an analysis of two adaptations of Raymond Chandler's 1940 novel Farewell, My Lovely. The first was written by Bill Morrison and aired on BBC Radio 4 in 1988. The second was also released and played on the same station in 2011, and was authored by Robin Brooks. By comparing the two plays regarding these three factors, my paper will try to establish how different approaches to abridgment, forming dramatic dialogue and narrator alter the message and the pace of a radio play.
