  • Developing intercultural awareness in EFL learners of different ages through songs [Elektronski vir] = Razvijanje medkulturne ozaveščenosti učencev različnih starosti pri pouku angleščine kot tujega jezika z uporabo pesmi : magistrsko delo

Intercultural awareness is often pushed aside in foreign language teaching. Nevertheless, it should not be disregarded, as it helps improve the students% communicative competence. Several notions, ... such as Intercultural Communicative Competence, acculturation, culture shock, culture bumps and cultural stereotypes, are present when we talk about intercultural awareness, but the most important is the connection of language and culture. Culture is visible in various features connected to communicative competence, for example in the level of politeness, in idiomatic expressions, in body language, etc. Inclusion of cultural topics in ELT is problematic for various reasons, some of them being the limitation of time, student's motivation, and the reliability of information. Nevertheless, there are also many benefits to using intercultural activities, the main ones being improved tolerance of the students and a greater efficiency of language learning. Several techniques can be used for developing intercultural awareness in ELT. One of the possibilities is to use songs as learning materials. There are many benefits to using songs, for example their relaxing nature, their versatility and authenticity, the fact that they enable personalisation and development of all four language skills, etc. Songs need to be chosen carefully and they need to be accompanied by appropriate pre-listening and post-listening activities. They can be used with students of all ages, but the choice of the song and the accompanying activities need to be adjusted according to the needs of a specific age group. The greatest benefit of songs is that they are excellent transmitters of culture. They enable learning about culturally related topics such as holidays and celebrations, nursery rhymes, folklore, history, and many more. The thesis includes an analysis of five different activities intended for the development of intercultural awareness through songs in different age groups. Four of the activities were prepared and carried out specifically for this purpose, and one activity was analysed based on a video lesson obtained online. The main aim was to validate if songs are an effective learning material for promoting intercultural awareness, if they can be used with students of different ages, and how diverse the activities with songs can be. The results confirm all these questions, as the students accepted the chosen activities well in all of the groups. The results would be even more accurate if the progress was observed throughout a longer period of time, so that long-term effects could be recorded. They would also be better if there were more activities carried out and analysed in several different groups of students.
