    Learner autonomy is not an unknown term in the world of English language teaching and over the past three decades, it has established itself as a key concept in this area. The learners have to ... systematically develop their capacity for autonomous learning in order to be successful in the language acquisition process. The present thesis paper attempts to investigate whether English films can be used to promote the notion of learner autonomy and help learners develop the capacity for it. The theoretical framework attempts to define the meaning of learner autonomy in the field of language teaching and presents different experts' views on the concept of autonomous learning. It also investigates the beneficial effects of films on foreign language acquisition and focuses on the use of films in learning outside the classroom environment. The research was conducted in two primary school English classes and two secondary school English classes in order to make a comparison between the two age groups in terms of using film to promote autonomous learning and establish any possible differences or similarities. Based on the conducted research, we can assume that both primary school, as well as secondary school pupils, have a positive outlook on developing their learner autonomy outside the classroom environment and that they are positively inclined towards using film as a learning tool in out-of-classroom autonomous learning.
