Backaround. Postoperative pain management is frequently insufficient. In the last decade this problem has been analyzed in numerous reports. But the least attention was devoted to the patient's ... attitude to postoperative pain which bears a great influence on the quality of postoperative analgesia. Patients from nine Slovene hospitals were questioned regarding their attitude to postoperative pain and experienced postoperative pain following cholecystectomy. Method. The inquiry included 67 adult patients predestined for cholecystectomy. All had already undergone an operation in the past. Prior to the imminent operation, the patients received brief information about postoperative pain and its management. They were questioned about the inevitability postoperative pain of their fear of it and postoperative pain expectation. After the operation they were questioned regarding actual postoperative pain, their demand for analgesics, satisfactionwith postoperative pain relief and their experience as compared tothe postoperative pain in the past. Results. 80.6% of patients believed thatpostoperative pain is inevitable, 37.3% of patients were afraid of it. They had mostly expected mild postoperative pain (64.2 %) but actually experienced moderate postoperative pain (55.2 %). Patients demanded analgesics in 56.7 %. 58.2 % of patients had more pain than they had expected.Despite that, only 1.5 % of the patients were unsatisfied with theirpostoperative pain relief. They had mostly a better experience (95.5%) than on previous occasions. Ćonclusions. The patients in Slovene hospitals believe that postoperative pain is inevitable. They experience postoperative pain following cholecystectomy more strongly than they expected. However, they are content with pain relief. Our patients require more knowledpain and its treatment.
