This paper delas with two types of taxonomies for non make-to-stock compaies and with some basic charactersitics of make-to-order production environment. Make-to-order production is the most common ...type of non make-to-stock production, and is therefore presented with some basic characteristics. Companies with order-based prduction have a different structure of business goals than those with production to stock - the latter ones tend primarily to greater exploatation of production capacities and flow level of stock. etc., whereas the main goal of the first ones is a satisfaction of agreements with the customer placing an order. Traditional production planning and control systems in make-to-stock environment neglect some basic characetristics of order-based production. Therefore the authors have developed a model for planing and control of order-based production (production in multi-project environment), which is far more flexible and consders organizational, socio-technical, logistics, communication, informational and business-oriented aspects.
