  • Preparation and characterisation of ion exchange fibers
    Stakne, Kristina ...
Ion exchange is a reversible transfer of ions between a solid and a liquid, accompanied by no substantial change in the structure of the solid phase. The solid phase is the ion exchange material with ... a large number of ionizable groups. The phenomena is of great importance for some industrial chemical processes, industrial waste water treatments, the food industry and in medicine. Cation - active fibres based on Polypropylene were obtained by the process of sulphonation. A Propylene monofilament was used because of its excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance. The influence of different treatment conditions on the sulphonating effect was studied. The efficiency of the sulphonation was followed by a determination of the electrokinetic properties. In order to determine the changes in the fibre surface charge, the zeta potential was measured through streaming potential measurements as a function of pH. Due to treatment with a sulphonating agent fibres change their hydrophobic character and the same changes were observed by a determination of the sorption properties using tensiometry and moisture regain additionally.
