  • A Simple, in-expensive and ultrasensitive magnetic nanofluid based sensor for detection of cations, ethanol and ammonia
Philip, John ; Vellaichamy, Mahendran ; Felicia, J.
We report a novel, inexpensive, portable and easy to fabricate ultrasensitive sensor for detection of different analytes using magnetically polarizable emulsion droplets. The sensor produces visually ... perceptible color changes, in the presence of analytes due to changes in the diffused electric double layer around the emulsion droplet. Large blue or red shift in the diffracted Bragg peak wavelength is observed in presence of analytes. The concentration of the ions is found to have a correlation with the Bragg peak wavelength shift. Our sensor showed selectivity to a large number of ions and is several times faster than 3D crystals based sensors. This approach has good sensitivity in recognizing biologically important (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Cu2+ and Fe3+), toxic metal (Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and Mn2+ and Al3+) ions, ammonia and ethanol. As the emulsion used in the sensor is easy to produce, inexpensive, portable and allows rapid detection of several toxic and biologically important metal ions with selectivity, our new approach should become a versatile tool for recognition of ions and other molecules
