  • Fracture toughness evaluation of mis-matched weld joints
    Praunseis, Zdravko ; Toyoda, M.
At welding of quenched and tempered (Q and T) HSLA steels the weld strength-mismatching can be used to satisfy the toughness requirements for the weld deposit. The cost of reduced preheating of these ... steels can be solved if one can prove that the use of soft electrodes for root passes do not endanger the overall quality of the joint. The present work deals with measurements of CTOD fracture toughness of undermatched X-grooved multi-pass weld joints with soft and without soft root layer mode on HSLA steel (40 mm thick) grade aHT 80. The set of BxB specimens were used with surface cracks and located in the heat affected zone and weld metal of the mentioned weld joints. The direct local CTOD technique is found to be particularly useful for the determination of fracture toughness values on such complex weldments. CTOD values were clearly influenced by softer material in the root layer.
