How can libraries contribute to a better and richer life of individuals and society? Is their importance in the time of general crisis stronger or weaker?Libraries are the most open and most ...accessible cultural institutions; they form the fundamental cultural infrastructure, available to everyone. Theyhave a range of roles, from the general cultural role, providing reading material and education in all life stages to the extremely emphasised social role. Libraries have more visitors than all other cultural institutions combined! The standard library collection, whose development is adapted to therequirements of users, is constantly expanded and upgraded; furthermore, new ways which would enable us to approach/access specific groups of users arebeing sought all the time. At the Maribor Public Library the standard services are combined with the challenges of the information society, and at the same time the latest trends are followed. We address the issues of childrenćs literature, develop the art of story-telling and nurture the work with our youngest readers. The information literacy programmes are provided for different groups of users. Our special attention is dedicated to people with special needs; mobile library collections are organized for care homes, and books can be borrowed even in hospitals. Our biblio-bus stops in occupational activity centres, and special programmes for the unemployed have been designed. Social responsibility is part of our mission and vision, while similar significance is attributed to the quality management policy that we have agreed to implement. We are not afraid of changes; problems are seen as opportunities for improvement, while our common goal is to satisfy the stakeholders: our employees, users, funders and public. We also believe that the investment into our new central library is a realistic expectation of Maribor citizens.
