Power electronic building blocks: a survey

Recent developments in power electronics, especially research activities, indicate that not only power electronics equipment but also many other design paradigms concerning power distribution and ...management are dramatically changing. Different initiatives such as more electric car, more electric ship etc, are being produced. Now power electronic building blocks initiated and sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, clearly show that the integration of power semiconductor elements with some degree of intelligence and data communication capability will move power electronics from power conversion to power processing, whose functions will be simply reconfigured through software. In this article a brief overview is given of the basic ideas about power electronic building blocks, their concepts, elements and major obstacles which should be solved.
