  • Influence of drying parameters on discolouration in ash-wood (Fraxinus excelsior L.)
    Straže, Aleš ; Gorišek, Željko
Seasoning stains emerging in ash-wood (Fraxinus excelsior L.) during drying were studied. 25.4 mm thick green boards were dried under 6 different drying schedules. The temperature was 20°, 35° or 50° ... C, and the relative air humidity was 65 or 95 %. Influence of the initial moisture content of wood and that of physiological state of ray parenchyma cells were studied as well. Instrumental gross colour measuring method (CIEL*a*b*) was used in addition to visual determination of colour changes. The development of discolouration generally increased with higher temperature and relative humidity. Moisture content around the fibre saturation point proved to be most critical for the development of stains. Low-temperature drying using higher drying rates is recommended to prevent discolouration.
