  • An assessment of HSLA steel embrittlement caused by welding
    Gliha, Vladimir ; Vuherer, Tomaž
An attempt to asssess the fracture toughness of two pairs of potential brittle sub-zones in the multi-pass HAZ in HSLA structural steel was made. Precracked, small-scale specimens and Charpy ... specimens with simulated microstructure were used. The brittleness revealed by fracture toughness testing is an evidence for embrittlement during welding. Due to the limitations of the thermal cycle simulator, the small-scale pre-cracked specimens were not large enough for direct ▫$K_Ie$▫ measurement. The results were modified and successfully compared. The conclusion is that pre-cracked specimens made from samples with a simulated microstructure prepared on a thermal cycle simulator are suitable for assessing ▫$K_Ie$▫ of most of the brittle sub-zones in HAZ using equivalent energy approach when their toughness is extremely low.
