Use of micro-Raman spectroscopy for the analysis of weathering products on stone monuments [Elektronski vir]

Black Drenov Grič limestone, which is widely used particularly in Slovenian baroque architecture, is subject to extensive deterioration. Samples of deteriorated limestone from two important ...historical monuments (located in Ljubljana, Slovenia) were investigated in order to characterise the weatheringproducts. The samples were examined using micro-Raman and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), in combination with SEM-EDX. The results indicate that the precipitation of soluble salts (gypsum and MgSO4 hydrates) contributes to extensive limestone deterioration. Gypsum was found, outdoors and indoors, as crusts and subflorescences, whereas MgSO4 hydrates appeared exlusively indoorsas efflorescences, together with gypsum.
