  • Civic education in the liberal and classical traditions
    Curren, Randall
The general aim of this paper is to consider how Aristotelian political theory stands in relation to political liberalism on the subject of civic or political education. In doing this, it summarizes ... some of the findings in Aristotle on the Necessity of Public Education, and places them in the context of current debates about the legitimacy and aims of civic education. It demostrates substantial convergence between the liberal and Aristotelian perspectives on some important questions, but also that the latter supplements the former in some useful ways. In particular, the Aristotelian framework suggests a middle way between two leading and opposed conceptions of the civic virtues and forms of student interaction to be promoted, and it reinforces the importance of pursuing civic education within a larger agenda of justice-promoting reforms. The paper concludes with some general observations about the character of theoretical reconciliations of the educational interests of state, child and parent.
