Theoretical basis: The communication with elderly people is becoming more and more important. Communication is the critical element of healthcare, since it provides the key information for a correct ...and successful treatment of the patient. This diploma thesis is focused on the communication in healthcare, with an emphasis on therapeutic communication and its implementation. It highlights the elements of therapeutic communication and the relationship between the patient and the nurse. The purpose of the thesis is to research and highlight the relationship between the patient and the nurse. Methods: The data has been gathered with the help of a questionnaire, that contained 24 different open type and half-open type questions. The study contained the answers of 90 randomly chosen regular nurses and nurses with medical degrees that work at the Hospital in Slovenj Gradec. The expectation was a 90 % realization of the sample, achieved was 88 % realization. Results: According to the respondents, therapeutic communication is important (31 %), or very important respectively (31 %), since it establishes trust between the nurse and the patient. A number of nurses implement therapeutic communication the whole time during the healthcare process (39 %). The overall consent is, that the nurses have the required knowhow, skillset and work experience to implement therapeutic communication, but lack the required time (50 %). That is the reason the respondents would like to gather additional knowledge, skills and experiences within the field (75 %). Discussion: Therapeutic communication is very important in healthcare since it leads to better mutual relationships, increase trust between the medical worker and the patient and improves the all around well being of the patient.
