  • Seasonal dynamics of metal complexation with collodial organic matter in coastal waters
    Klun, Katja, 1988- ...
Large volumes of seawater were sampled monthly from December 2011 to December 2012 at a site (F) in the southeastern part of Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea) with the aim to look inside ... seasonal changes in metal complexation with colloidal organic matter (COM). The metal content was also investigated in COM isolated from the Isonzo river (salinity: 0.2 psu) and Isonzo river mouth (salinities: 16, 26 and 33 psu). Metal content was measured in GF/F filtrates and in organic colloids (> 5kDa) isolated by ultrafiltration. Previous studies showed, that COM mainly originates from phytoplankton and is mostly composed of polysaccharides and lipids and has multiple functional groups which can bind metals with different affinity that can consequently reduce free ions in the water column. Our results show, that metal concentration in COM in the water column of Gulf of Trieste at salinity 33 psu is higher compared to Isonzo river at salinity 0.2 psu, which reflects in high linear correlation between salinity and metal concentration in COM (0.70 < R2 Me-Salinity < 0.99)...
