  • Investigations on altering the neutral grounding resistance and its impact in protective relays operation

The paper adresses the issues of how changing the value of grounding resistance can affect the protection system operation in the distribution networks grounded through a low resistance. In Slovenia, ... most of medium voltage (20 kV) distribution networks are grounded through a 80 Ohm resistance limiting the maximum resistive component of ground fault current to 150 A. Recently, a detailed investigation on the impact of changing the grounding resistance to 4o Ohm, and thus changing the maximal resistive component of ground fault current to 300 A, on protective relay operation was was conducted for the mixed 20 kV network of Elektro Ljubljana. In the paper, some findings of that investigation are presented. For computer simulations, awell known computer program ATP-EMTP was used. To verify the simulations model, extensive field tests were conducted during which ground fault current, as well as three-phase faulted line currents and voltages were measured. In order to cope with various uncertainties associated with the occurence of ground faults, a large number of probability based simulations were run. Some results for a typical rural substation 110/20 kV are given.
