Lightning caused damages on OPGW

The paper deals with damages caused by lightning on Optical ground wires (OPGW). It is divided into three parts. In the first part number and extend of damages due to the lightning activityis ...evaluated. The main objective of first part of the paper is to show the extent of damages that can be expected during exploitation of the OPGW equipped power lines in areas with high flash density rates. Results collected are compared and correlated with the flash density and amplitude probability for total over 900 km lines length. The second part of the paper gives analytical and numerical estimation on the amount of melted/evaporated materials as a function of a lightning charge discharged during the lightning. Results obtained are used for estimation of charge discharged which can be used for comparison with data collected by ligtning location system (LLS) and discrimination between ligtning and short-circuit damages. The third part of the paper is devoted to potential improvements in order to achieve better OPGW ligtning performance.
