    Conventional theories do not give an adequate attention to the causes of inflation for they are giving first and foremost an economic explanation instead of an economic-sum-social one. When a ... technologically leading sector, in which the growth of productivity and capital efficiency is faster than average, grants wage increases it set the pace for other sectors to follow together with others in which productivity is growing beneath the average. Wages in these sectors will be rising faster than productivity and prices will need to be increased accordingly if the rate of profit is to remain unchanged. The "sheltered" industries are able to raise the prices because they are not under the threat of international or domestic competition. The transmission of wage increases accurred since social forces in the social-market type of the economy would not tolerate a slower rate of living standards for workers employed in the lagging sectors.
