Reflexionen über die Heimat : Burgenlandkroaten und Kroaten in Deutschland

This paper deals with two very distinct Croatian minority groups - Burgenland Croats in Austria and Croats in Germany - and examines the attitudes and feelings of the members of the communities in ...question towards the land they call their homeland. The corpus consists of two parts: the first part comprises biographical texts of Burgenland Croats which were collected in the course of a larger study on Croatian-German language contact in Burgenland, whereas the second part includes reflections found on an internet forum in which Croats from Germany are active participants. This paper discusses only the parts relevant for the topic to illustrate our main points. Our analysis has shown that individual texts may enable us to draw some conclusions on a more general level. Apart from that, the analyzed texts indicate that the notion of homeland is closely connected to the notions of language and identity.
