  • Improving capacity of motorway off-ramps and road with intelligent transport systems
    Trček, Luka, 1991- ; Lipar, Peter, 1955-
In this paper, the capacity of the intersection between motorway off-ramp and frontage road under different traffic volumes is investigated. The motorway off-ramp is connected to the four-leg ... roundabout. Long-term congestions occur daily and cause queue spillback onto the motorway. Due to these congestions in addition to the reduced capacity of the motorway section, traffic safety on the motorway is significantly affected. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of different typical traffic volume distributions on the capacity of intersections between motorway off-ramp and frontage roads. Microsimulation traffic models are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligent transport systems in improving traffic conditions at critical roundabout legs during high traffic volumes without major road reconstruction. It is shown that for certain traffic demand scenarios, it is possible to achieve a significant improvement in traffic conditions with appropriate signal control on only one leg of the roundabout.
