  • Monitoring of bitumen hardening with a non-destructive ultrasonic shear wave reflection technique
    Zavrtanik, Nataša ...
The article presents a possibility of using a non-destructive ultrasonic shear wave reflection technique for monitoring hardening process of bitumen. The technique relies on the use of a new ... measuring instrument called USWR-4 Hardening meter, which was developed to be applicable directly in situ and has been effectively used for cement-based materials so far. It works on the principle of continuous measurement of change of a shear wave reflection coefficient. Three different types of paving grade and two polymer-modified bitumens were used. Results show that the presented ultrasound technique can effectively track a temperature-dependent hardening process of bitumen. Bituminous binder is primarily used in highway and road constructions as a binding material mixed with aggregate particles and is an essential component in the composition of asphalt mixtures. Several properties of bitumen are measured on a daily basis as a part of a quality control (SIST EN ISO 3838 2004, DIN 52013 2007, EN 12593 2007, EN 1426 2007a, EN 1426 2007b, EN 12596 2007, SIST EN 13398 2010). For asphalt producers, the most important measured property is the dependence between temperature and viscosity of bitumen. In the case of paving grade bitumen, this dependence is linear in log scale (Heukelom diagram) (Mouton 2006 ). The temperature in the asphalt mixer is set according to the so-called equiviscous temperature of bitumen. In the past, capillary viscosimeters for measuring bitumen viscosity were most commonly used. Nowadays, viscosity of bitumen is ordinarily determined with a rotational viscosimeter (rheometer). With such viscosimeters, it is hard to measure the effect of continuous chemical and physical processes on viscosity of bitumen, such as ageing or rejuvenation effect.
