  • Evaluation of global optimization algorithms for capillary tube suction line heat exchanger sizing [Elektronski vir]
Lorbek, Luka, strojnik ; Kitanovski, Andrej
Capillary tubes in household refrigerators are normally put in thermal contact with the suction line, forming a so-called capillary tube suction line heat exchanger (CTSLHX). To ensure optimal ... refrigerator performance the capillary tube length and internal diameter, the thermal contact length of the CTSLHX, and its position must be properly determined. In this study three global optimization algorithms (genetic algorithm, particle swarm, and an interior-point algorithm) were coupled with a numerical model of the CTSLHX. The primary purpose was to evaluate whether they can quickly, precisely, and accurately find the optimal combination of the four mentioned geometric parameters. In 30 simulated cases the interior-point method was computationally the fastest but lacked accuracy and precision. On the other hand, the genetic and particle swarm algorithms were slower, but significantly more accurate and reliable. Thus, global optimization algorithms were shown to offer a convenient alternative to manually sizing the CTSLHX.
