  • Inlet guide vane thrust in semi axial pumps
    Gantar, Marjan, 1951-
Semi axial pumps of high specific speed with inlet guide vane regulation have often been used as cooling water pumps in thermal power stations. In these cases the constant flow is required which is ... regulated with regard to the changed water levels in the inflow and outflow channels by changing the set angles of inlet guide vane apparatus. In this article the emphasis is put on the experimental determination of the thrust of an inlet guide vane which can become very forceful at more demanding operating conditions. The most favourable way of pump operation is shown from the viewpoint of the inlet guide vane thrust. At dimensioning of inlet guide vanes it is necessary to consider also the thrusts which appear in the case of a runaway of the pump at extreme positive and negative set angles. These pumps have often been built in the systems demanding starting at zero flow, what is to the least of advantage regarding the power requirements. In these cases the inlet guide vane apparatus has also the task of reducing the driving power as the start of the pump takes places always at large positive vortex only. Operation at these angles has also its drawbacks, due to an early cavitation appearence on the guide vane apparatus, therefore, it is limited to shorter running periods.
