Vodenje v namiznem tenisu = Leadership in table tennis

The role of coaches in sports is the subject of a huge body of literature of varying quality, but due to lack of empirical studies in Slovenia in this field the authors only present their personal ...experiences and beliefs on the factors determining successful start of a coach's work with a table tennis team. They emphasise the importance of team building, assembling competent and motivated coaching staff, and specifying all the relevant preconditions and expectations in the agreement before starting the job. The coach should inevitably assume the role of the fatherly figure, whereby his/her authority should be based exclusively on reference role, information and knowledge, rather than on punishment. The coach's authority is crucial in situations of crisis and when working with younger players. In conclusion, the Slovenian table tennis community is reminded that unless playing in the national team is perceived as the highest honour and supreme reward in itself, it is unrealistic to expect top world-class results.
