  • Unleaded free-cutting aluminium alloys for extruding
    Smolej, Anton, 1941- ...
Standard aluminium free-cutting alloys contain lead and bismuth for improving their machinability. Tin as environment friendly element can be used to replace lead and bismuth in these alloys. The ... paper deals with the properties of AlCuMgPb (standard alloy 2030) and AlCu5PbBi (standard ally 2011) in wich lead and bismuth were substituted by tin. Microstructure, composition of free machining phases, flow stress during the working of these alloys and the influence of tin on the mechanical properties and machinability of as-extruded alloys are described in comparison with the properties of standard leaded alloys. The alloys of the AlCuMgSn group were manufactured into final semiproducts by press-quenching at indirect extrusion press. Tin reduced flow stress during the working of AlCuMgSn alloys in comparison with standard ones. Mechanical properties decreased with an increasing tin content. The machinability of as-extruded alloys was satisfactory at an optimum tin conten which had to be higher than 1 mass percent.
