Properties of lead-free machinable aluminium alloys

Free-cutting aluminium alloys contain lead and bismuth for improving the machinability. Since lead is poisonous, a tendency is to replace it with other elements among which tin is the most suitable. ...Microstructural properties of free-cutting phases based on tin in the AlCu5 alloys were described, and influence of tin on the machinability of alloys next to rupture of materials in comparison with the standard leaded AlCu5PbBi (AA2011) alloy were analyzed.
