  • Subkranialni pristop do tumorjev sprednje lobanjske baze = The subcranial approach to anterior skull base tumours

    Although the first cases of surgery of anterior skull base tumours were first published over 45 years ago, such surgery is still rarely performed in Slovenia. In the past, severe postoperative ... complications occurred frequently because of insufficient reconstruction and lack of antibiotic treatment. Another important reason for the infrequent surgical treatment of these tumours is that they were situated in "no man's land"; they were situated too low for neurosurgeons, and too high for ENT and maxillofacial surgeons. With the subcranial approach to the anterior skull base, ENT surgeons operate in anoperative field they are very familiar with. All important structures are well visible, so "en block" tumour resection and reconstruction are possible in most cases. This approach is useful for the treatment of benign and malignant tumours of the anterior skull base, and deformations and fractures of the ethmoid region with liquorrhea. This paper presents four patients operated on using this method at the Otorhinolaryngology and Cervicofacial Surgery Department of the Maribor General Hospital.
