    Over the past ten years, scientists and clinicians have demonstrated the feasibility, validity, reliability and efficacy of early detection of hearing loss in infants by universal newborn hearing ... screening. At the Celje General Hospital, this type of screening was introduced in August 2002. All newborns, except for those requiring neonatal intensive care, who are screened later during the first month of age, receive hearing screening before discharge fromthe hospital. Infants who do not pass the screening are subjected to appropriate audiologic and medical evaluation in order to confirm their hearing loss before three months of age. The objective is for all infants witha permanent hearing loss to receive the necessary services before six months of age. A screening programme for newborns has been developed and medical professionals in our region are regularly informed about it. Physicians providing care for infants and young children must understand the importance of abnormal screening test results and of adequate monitoring for infants who require follow-up.
