Boršoš, Imre ; Podboj, Jernej ; Jenko, Klemen
Primary malignant mucosal melanoma of the nose and paranasal sinuses is a rareentity, but it is the most frequent melanoma of the head and neck. The etiopathogenesis of this type of melanoma is ... poorly understood; it is assumed that it originates from neuroectodermal mucosal cells. Sinonasal mucosal melanoma is primarily a disease of elderly adults. In the nose, the most frequent site of origin is the lateral nasal wall, the turbinates and the nasal septum, and in the sinuses it is the ethmoid. Its symptoms include unilateral nasal obstruction and nasal bleeding. Its treatment, if possible, should always be surgical. Fourteen patients with mucosal malignant melanoma of the nose and sinuses have been treated at our clinic over the past twenty years. Eleven melanomas were located in the nose and three in the ethmoidal cells. Nine of these patients were female and five male. Their ages ranged between 49 and 82 years. Sinonasal mucosal malignant melanoma is a highly malignant tumour. Distant metastases mean short survival following detection and at this stage of the disease the patient should have symptomatic treatmentonly.
