    Background. Cigarette smoking is the most important preventable cause of deathand a major risk factor in numerous chronic diseases. Methods. Smoking-attributable fractions (SAFs) and ... smoking-attributable mortality and hospitalizations in Slovenia in the year 1990 for cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases and digestive diseases for adults over 35 yearsof age were calculated. For four pediatric dignoses smoking-attributable mortality and hospitalizations attributed to maternal smoking during pregnancyfor children under one year of age determined. Results. An estimated 3572 deaths and 15565 hospitalizations resulted from cigarette smoking, i.e. 19.9 percent of total hospital admissions among the patients of the same age groups. Conclusions. Smoking is an important cause of mortality and hospitalizations in Slovenia. Calculation of the impact of smoking and associated diseases on the health status of the population can be used to guide preventive intervention strategies.
